   Mira Murati, former Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI, has launched Thinking Machines Lab, an AI startup in San Francisco. The company focuses on developing adaptable, user-friendly AI systems that prioritize human-AI collaboration over full autonomy. Murati has assembled a team of experts, including former OpenAI co-founder John Schulman and ex-OpenAI engineer Barrett Zoph. The startup emphasizes open science by sharing research and code to democratize AI and foster collaboration. Murati stated, "We're building three things: helping people adapt AI systems to work for their specific needs; developing strong foundations to build more capable AI systems; fostering a culture of open science that helps the whole field understand and improve these systems.”

2. Grok 3 vs. OpenAI: The Benchmark Dispute

   Elon Musk’s xAI has unveiled Grok 3, claiming it outperforms OpenAI’s o3-mini-high on math benchmarks. However, OpenAI disputes this, pointing out that xAI omitted the consensus@64 (cons@64) method, which boosts accuracy by selecting the most common answer from multiple attempts.

   When cons@64 is factored in, OpenAI’s models outperform Grok 3. Even on first-attempt scores, Grok 3 falls short of OpenAI’s o3-mini-high and o1-medium models. While xAI touts Grok 3 as a breakthrough, questions remain about the true cost and accuracy of its claims.
